Description
Mary, Queen of Scots, stands facing the emissaries of Queen Elizabeth I. At the bottom of the staircase behind are her personal attendants, among whom is the master of her household, Sir Andrew Melvil. To the right, the masked executioner stands by the block, with his axe in his left hand. Part of a coffin is seen in corner.
